Scarlet Kinney is a visual artist, writer and shamanic teacher whose work is inspired by mythic and shamanic themes. A Maine native, she earned a bachelor's degree in Studio Art with a minor in Creative Writing from Goddard College, and a master's degree in Mythological Studies with an Emphasis on Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Following a 1988 initiation by fire into a shamanic path, she founded The Standing Bear Center for Shamanic Studies in Downeast Maine's coastal forest. As a result of her many years of experience practicing and teaching shamanism, she created depth shamanism, a new approach to feminine psychological health and well-being that uses shamanic methods to heal and empower contemporary women. She teaches women's shamanic ways and myth-writing seminars for women at the Center, where she also trains qualified apprentices to become depth shamanic counselors.PLEASE NOTE: The books listed below are currently out of print, and are being revised and expanded. Scarlet's writing explores the mythic and shamanic undercurrents at work during those times in our lives when ordinary events take on extraordinary meanings. Her paintings inform and illustrate her tales, and are sold exclusively through the Center's fine art gallery, Turtle Mountain Mythic Art, and the gallery's online site. Scarlet is hard at work on her next book, in which she tells the fascinating tale of her shamanic initiation experience. BOOKS by Scarlet L. Kinney The Stone Heart Turtle People: Mythic Tales of the Maine CoastDrawing upon her unique perspective and her authentic, original voice, Kinney gives us her first novel, in which she expertly weaves a collection of interrelated tales into a literary tapestry depicting life in Downeast Maine, as experienced by feisty Indigo Shaughnessey. Woven into Kinney's novel like a bright, mysterious thread is her original shamanic myth, The Stone Heart Turtle People. Overview A fifth-generation Irish American Catholic whose ancestors immigrated to Maine from Ireland's County Clare during the potato famine of 1847-49, Indigo Shaughnessey has always had visions. Animals, birds and trees, not to mention ancestral spirits, communicate with her, but her Catholic training and the social taboos of her small-town culture have taught her not to speak of her magical world, which she shares during her youth with her cousin, Little Deer. As an adolescent, separated from Little Deer by distance and their changing worlds, she begins writing down her experiences of coastal life, which are rich with conflict, adventure, and the stuff of myth. Fighting to maintain her sense of feminine power in a world that seems to want to crush her, she becomes rebellious, going so far as to join one of her high school's girl's gangs that are acting out in outrageous ways all over town. When she reads her adolescent journals many years later, she begins an exploration of the secret meaning of her life, discovering at last who she really is.
